MLB Rumors: Red Sox Shopping DH After Alex Bregman Signing

The Boston Red Sox are shopping designated hitter Masataka Yoshida following their signing of Alex Bregman.

With Bregman expected to play second base and Rafael Devers staying at third, Yoshida’s presence creates a roster logjam.

Top prospect Kristian Campbell is expected to break into the majors soon, and the team sees its best lineup featuring Devers at DH, Bregman at third, and Campbell at second.

“It’s pretty easy to envision a Red Sox lineup with Bregman at third, Campbell at second, and Devers at DH being the best version available by the time spring turns to summer,” MassLive’s Chris Cotillo wrote.

With limited defensive flexibility, Yoshida appears to be the odd man out.

Now 31, Yoshida is two years into a five-year, $90 million contract but has struggled to find a defensive role, making him a full-time DH.

While he has hit for average (.285 career BA) with a low strikeout rate, his lack of power—just 25 home runs in 915 at-bats—has limited his value. The Red Sox explored moving him last offseason but struggled to find a team willing to take on his contract.

With $55.8 million remaining over three years, a trade may require Boston to retain some of his salary. According to FanSided’s Jackson Roberts, the Cleveland Guardians could be a potential suitor since they need offensive help after losing Josh Naylor.

“Cleveland remains very short on offense beyond Steven Kwan and Jose Ramirez,” Roberts wrote, making Yoshida an intriguing option.

A trade could help both sides, with Boston looking for pitching depth despite adding Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler.

A deal involving Guardians right-hander Luis Ortiz, who posted a 3.32 ERA in 2024, would address that need while giving Cleveland an offensive boost.

Trading Yoshida would also open up the DH spot for Devers, keeping Bregman at third and creating a clear path for Campbell at second.

The Red Sox are expected to continue shopping Yoshida, and a deal may come down to how much of his remaining contract they are willing to absorb.
