MLB Rumors: Mets Interested In Bringing Back Jose Iglesias?
Madrigal, who signed a split contract in the offseason, provided roster flexibility since he could be optioned to the minors. Team president David Stearns previously stated, “Having some flexibility there in that role is, frankly, probably needed for us right now,” and that stance has not changed despite the injury.
While Iglesias was a key contributor to the Mets’ NLCS run last season, batting .337 with strong defense, his inability to be optioned makes him a less viable fit for the team’s current roster construction.

Instead of signing Iglesias, the Mets are expected to look at younger, more versatile internal options.
Luisangel Acuña, Brett Baty, and Donovan Walton are among the top candidates, with Acuña showing promise in a brief MLB stint last year.
Ronny Mauricio, recovering from ACL surgery, could also be in the mix when healthy. Though Iglesias remains a steady defender, his offensive game is based on contact rather than power or on-base skills, which does not align with the Mets’ overall approach.
With an infield that already includes Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, Mark Vientos, and Jeff McNeil, the team appears set on keeping its bench spot open for a more flexible player.

Coming off an 89-win season and a deep playoff run, the Mets are finalizing their roster ahead of Opening Day.
Their focus remains on maintaining flexibility rather than adding veteran depth, even one as productive as Iglesias was in 2024.
As Newsday’s Tim Healey reported, the team still considers Iglesias “not a fit” for 2025, making a reunion unlikely despite his past contributions.
