MLB Rumors: Concerning Update On Astros & Alex Bregman Talks

The Houston Astros' chances of retaining Alex Bregman appear to be slipping away, as general manager Dana Brown spoke about the free-agent third baseman in the past tense during a recent media luncheon.

“We lost (Kyle) Tucker and Bregman,” Brown said, later clarifying that internal discussions were ongoing but admitting there had been no recent talks with agent Scott Boras.

The Astros’ six-year, $156 million offer remains on the table, but with Spring Training approaching, there has been little movement toward a deal.

Despite José Altuve expressing willingness to shift to left field if it meant bringing Bregman back, the front office appears to be prioritizing roster changes over keeping its longtime stars.

Houston’s offseason moves are showing a transition away from Bregman.

The team acquired Isaac Paredes from the Cubs in the Kyle Tucker trade and signed first baseman Christian Walker to a three-year, $60 million deal.

Their attempt to trade for Nolan Arenado collapsed when he exercised his no-trade clause, and while the Astros recently moved Ryan Pressly to free up payroll space, there is no indication they plan to use that money to re-sign Bregman.

The former World Series MVP is drawing interest from teams like the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Toronto Blue Jays, and Detroit Tigers, all of whom could make competitive offers that force Houston out of the bidding.

Unless the Astros make a sudden push, Bregman appears poised to play elsewhere for the first time in his career.
