Minnesota Twins Sign Free Agent Former All-Star

Since putting up an All-Star season in 2022, it's been a couple of disappointing years for first baseman Ty France. On Tuesday, as pretty much an afterthought on the free agent market, France agreed to terms with the Minnesota Twins on a contract for 2025.

It's a one-year deal for France, who is expected to replace Carlos Santana at first for the Twins, after he returned to the Cleveland Guardians in free agency.

France, 30, spent most of last season, and the previous three years, with the Seattle Mariners. A trade deadline deal sent him to the Cincinnati Reds. He posted a combined slash line in 2024 of .234/.305/.365 with 13 home runs, 51 RBIs, and 46 runs scored with a .670 OPS. His 92 OPS+ was his first time below the average since his short rookie season in 2019.

The Twins' only other options at first base were Jose Miranda and Edouard Julien, neither of whom have played much at the position in the majors.

France can also back up at second and third base, giving Minnesota a lot of flexibility in their infield, and more backup at third, where Royce Lewis is bound to spend plenty of time on the injured list at some point.
