Miami Marlins Acquire Veteran Right-Handed Pitcher

The Miami Marlins have claimed right-handed reliever Seth Martinez off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

To clear space on the roster, Miami transferred right-hander Eury Pérez to the 60-day injured list as he continues recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Pérez, who posted a 3.15 ERA in 19 starts as a rookie in 2023, is expected to return around the All-Star break. Martinez, 30, was designated for assignment by Arizona earlier this week after the Diamondbacks signed veteran reliever Kendall Graveman to a one-year, $1.35 million deal.

This marks his second waiver claim of the offseason, as Arizona had previously picked him up from the Houston Astros in November.

Martinez spent the past three seasons with Houston, logging a 3.93 ERA over 137.1 innings while serving as a depth arm in their bullpen.

He appeared in 44 games last season, recording a 3.59 ERA with a 36:18 strikeout-to-walk ratio across 52.2 innings. His minor league numbers have been even stronger, posting a 2.66 ERA and a 31.5% strikeout rate over the past four years.

A major factor in his movement this offseason has been a lack of minor league options, which prevents teams from shuttling him between Triple-A and the majors.

"If he holds a spot all season, he can theoretically be retained via arbitration through 2028," MLB Trade Rumors reported, making him a potential long-term bullpen piece for Miami.

The Marlins have undergone a lot of bullpen changes in their rebuild, dealing Tanner Scott, A.J. Puk, Huascar Brazobán, and others last year.

Martinez joins Andrew Nardi and Anthony Bender as one of the few relievers with at least two years of big-league experience, giving him a strong chance to secure a permanent role.
