Latest on Alex Bregman Has 4 Teams In the Running to Land the Free Agent

While the Houston Astros are back in the hunt to retain free agent and longtime star third baseman Alex Bregman, they still have some competition for him, according to insider Jon Heyman in New York Post.

Heyman notes that while the Astros "are apparently still willing to do the $156M, six-year deal they reportedly offered Alex Bregman in November," that would represent a $26 million annual salary, down a bit from the $28M he earned in 2024. Bregman, says Heyman, does not want to take a paycut on his AAV.

Then Heyman also dropped this nugget:

Bregman also has a lucrative six-year offer (with an opt-out after the first year) from a team that may not be not be high on his list.

He then lists three other team who are potential landing spots for Bregman:

  • Chicago Cubs
  • Boston Red Sox
  • Detroit Tigers

The Cubs, it should be noted, have already added two of Bregman's old Astros teammates, in young superstar outfielder Kyle Tucker and closer Ryan Pressly.

The Red Sox and Tigers have both been rumored as Bregman suitors throughout the offseason. While Boston could move incumbent 3B Rafael Devers to first base if they acquired Bregman, or ask the ex-Astro to move to second base, the Tigers would have no such lineup issues. Plus they have the third baseman's former manager from Houston, AJ Hinch at the helm, which could be a selling point for Bregman.

The two-time All-Star has a career .272 average, with a .366 on-base and an .848 OPS (132 OPS+), though he hasn't reached any of those marks over the last couple of seasons as his production has dipped a bit each year.

Bregman will be 31 on Opening Day 2025.
