Insider: Yankees "Too Broke" To Add Any More Help

MLB insider Robert Murray believes the New York Yankees are out of money and unlikely to make any more moves before Opening Day.

On The Baseball Insiders podcast, Murray asked fellow insider Jon Heyman if the Yankees would add infield depth, to which Heyman bluntly replied, “Yeah, I don’t see it. The Yankees, I don’t think they’re adding anybody. I’m told they have no money.”

Despite a busy offseason that saw them land Paul Goldschmidt, Max Fried, and Cody Bellinger while retaining ace Gerrit Cole, financial flexibility appears to be an issue.

The Yankees lost Juan Soto to the Mets on a record-breaking $765 million deal but reinvested in other areas instead of pursuing a top infielder.

That decision leaves third base as a major concern, with the team relying on 36-year-old DJ LeMahieu, who hit just .204 last season, along with Oswaldo Cabrera and Oswald Peraza.

They also passed on a chance to trade for Nolan Arenado, even though the Cardinals star was open to waiving his no-trade clause to join New York. With ownership reluctant to spend further, a salary-clearing trade, such as moving Marcus Stroman’s contract, seems unlikely.

Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner recently questioned whether spending big guarantees success. “Should I really need a $300-plus million payroll to win a championship? Does having a huge payroll really increase my chances that much?” he said.

With that approach, the Yankees appear willing to gamble on LeMahieu bouncing back and Cabrera stepping up. If they struggle, the lack of depth could be a major issue in a competitive American League race, but as Heyman put it, “there’s no money” to fix it.
