Insider Projects INSANE Number It'll Take To Sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

Juan Soto's $765 million monster free agent deal from the New York Mets has thrown contract talks into chaos for some other teams and players, most notably Vladimir Guerrero Jr.  and the Toronto Blue Jays.

The latest report on Wednesday from insider Jon Heyman with Bleacher Report suggests an absolutely insane number that Vladdy will be asking for in free agency after the 2025 season.

I think it's probably gonna have to be in the 'sixes' to sign him, probably $600 million plus. The Blue Jays did not get there obviously. I think they stepped out (of their comfort zone,) they offered more than they wanted to offer, but they didn't offer enough obviously.

How Heyman (or Guerrero Jr.) gets to this number is a real head-scratcher, regardless of the Soto contract.

Juan Soto has been a superstar since the moment he arrived in the majors in 2018, and every single year since then. He is tops among all active major leaguers in career on-base percentage (.421), has a career .950 OPS and a 160 OPS+

Compare those numbers to Guerrero... Vlad has had two 'superstar' seasons of his six years in the bigs, and the rest just simply good to very good. He has a career .863 OPS and 137 OPS+.

"I'd say (2 years ago) when (Rafael) Devers signed (with the Boston Red Sox) for $313 million (over 10 years), that seemed to be the comp...," added Heyman. "Maybe (the Blue Jays) could have got it done (then)... They always seem to be a little bit behind."

As for whether the Blue Jays got anywhere close to matching Guerrero's contract demands before his deadline kicked in at the start of training camp, we know that the first baseman simply answered, "no."

2024 was one of those two 'superstar' type years on Vlad's resume, when he hit .323 with a .940 OPS and a 166 OPS+, along with 30 homers and 103 RBIs. He'll have to replicate something like that if he is to command in the $600 million range, as Heyman stunningly suggests.
