Free Agent Update: 9 Notable Position Players Still Available

The free agent market continues to dwindle, particularly on the pitching side, as another closer was locked up on Tuesday

But on the position player side of things, there are still some notable names available. Granted, most of these guys are on the wrong side of 35, but they've been around the block and can still contribute to a major league team.

  • JD Martinez
  • Alex Verdugo
  • Anthony Rizzo
  • Jose Iglesias
  • Brian McCann
  • David Peralta
  • Whit Merrifield
  • Robbie Grossman
  • Matt Carpenter
There's no denying JD Martinez's power. The 37-year-old has proven in at least two of the past four seasons that he can still hit the longball with regularity. It was just two years ago with the LA Dodgers that Martinez blasted 33 HR, with 103 RBIs in just 113 games, with an .893 OPS. Last season with the NY Mets, not so much, as he was only able to muster up 16 homers and a .725 OPS.

Verdugo had been an above-average hitter in his first five full major league seasons. Nothing earth-shattering, but a decent bat. That was until last year's .233 batting mark with a .647 OPS and an OPS+ of 83 with the Yankees.

Iglesias had a tremendous year with the Mets in 2024, batting .337 with an OPS+ of 137 in 85 games. Will they decide to bring him back? The latest report seemed to indicate that he still "wasn't a fit."

Rizzo, 35, seemed to be on his last legs with the Yankees last season, batting just .224 with eight home runs. Age and injuries have taken their toll.
