Free Agent Signing: Jack Flaherty Re-Joins Familiar Team

After four years of battling injuries, starter Jack Flaherty was finally able to regain his form in 2024, posting a tremendous four months with the Detroit Tigers, then parlaying that into a trade to the Los Angeles Dodgers, who he helped to the World Series championship.

Now, the last top starter left on the free agent market, Flaherty has decided to re-sign with the Tigers on a two-year deal, with an opt out after 2025.

Jon Heyman reports that Flaherty’s deal is worth $35M, but $25M of it comes in 2025.

It was reported a few weeks back by Ken Rosenthal that after not being able to find a substantial long-term package, Flaherty would be  open to considering a short-term deal with a high average annual value, which is exactly what he wound up doing.

Flaherty returned to his dominant self in 2024, after flashing Cy Young potential in his younger days with the St. Louis Cardinals. After posting a 2.95 ERA in 18 starts with the Tigers last year, he was dealt at the trade deadline to LA, and was an important piece to keep the Dodgers rotation afloat while it was ravaged by injuries staff-wide. He finished the year with a 3.17 ERA and a tremendous 194:38 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Now he’s back to slot into the Tigers rotation right behind Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal, giving them an impressive 1-2 punch.
