Chicago Cubs Sign One Of The Best Defensive Infielders In MLB
The Chicago Cubs have signed veteran infielder Nicky Lopez to a minor league contract.
Lopez, who turns 30 in March, will earn $1.5 million if he makes the major league roster. His strong defensive skills and ability to play second base, shortstop, and third base make him a strong option, especially with starting second baseman Nico Hoerner recovering from offseason flexor tendon surgery.
“Lopez is a plus defender and brings experience to our infield mix,” a team source said. He joins former Kansas City Royals teammate Brad Keller, whom the Cubs also signed to a minor league deal.

Lopez spent last season with the Chicago White Sox, batting .241 with a .606 OPS while providing strong defensive value with 5 Outs Above Average (OAA).
His best offensive season came in 2021 when he hit .300 for Kansas City, but his role with the Royals diminished following the emergence of Bobby Witt Jr.
He was traded to Atlanta in 2023 before spending 2024 on the South Side. While Lopez’s bat has been inconsistent, his glove remains a strength, as his 53 Outs Above Average since 2021 rank among the best for infielders.
His defensive reliability could be crucial for the Cubs early in the season as they prepare to open their schedule against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Tokyo on March 18.

With Hoerner’s availability uncertain, Lopez will compete for a spot alongside offseason acquisitions Jon Berti and Vidal Bruján, while prospect Matt Shaw is also in the mix.
Even if he doesn’t land a starting job, Lopez’s versatility makes him a strong candidate for a utility role.
