Blue Jays' Rival Pegged as Frontrunner to Sign Guerrero Jr. in Free Agency
One team seems set as a frontrunner, as Vladdy has "told friends" that "he'd love to play for the Boston Red Sox," reports insider Bob Nightengale.
It’s no secret that Vladimir Guerrero has told friends that if he hits free agency, he’d love to play for the Boston Red Sox. Free agency begins in 8 1/2 months as Guerrero officially enters spring without a contract extension.

Certainly, the deep pockets of New York Mets' owner Steve Cohen will have something to say about that, but that decision will come in about nine months.
The Red Sox currently have a young power-hitting prospect in Triston Casas as their first baseman, though his name has come up in trade talks this past winter after a rough 2024 season. In addition, the BoSox have a little problem of what to do with 3B Rafael Devers, who is, shall we say, perturbed about the team bringing in another third baseman in Alex Bregman.
One of them (hint, hint—Devers) could have to move to first base, which keeps that position clogged up, with or without Casas, in advance of any Guerrero pursuit.
In New York, the Mets recently re-signed their own longtime first baseman Pete Alonso after an offseason of lengthy and sometimes bitter negotiations. But he has an opt-out after the 2025 season.
The NY Yankees are seen as a longshot, if you take Vladdy at his word after his comments of a couple of years ago, in which he said he would never sign with the Yankees, "even dead."
Meanwhile, Sportrac has pegged Guerrero's value on the open market as very much alive, and it's a whopping $427 million.
Vlad Guerrero Jr.’s estimated market value per Spotrac:

A 12-year contract at that amount would average out to $35.58 million AAV, and would take Vlad until his age-37 season. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out—in Boston, Queens, or elsewhere.
