Yankees Snag Top-20 Prospect After Surprising Move By Cubs
Arias, 23, was unexpectedly designated for assignment by the Cubs to make room for veteran pitcher Colin Rea, a decision that left many around the league puzzled.
Ranked as the Cubs’ No. 18 prospect by MLB Pipeline, Arias brings a dynamic arsenal, including a fastball that touches 99 mph, a sharp slider, and a promising changeup.
Originally signed as a shortstop by the Toronto Blue Jays, Arias converted to pitching with the Cubs and has since shown flashes of brilliance, despite control issues.

While Arias posted a concerning 16.8% walk rate across Double-A and Triple-A in 2024, his strikeout potential remains undeniable.
Over 60.1 innings last season, he struck out 72 batters, contributing to a career strikeout rate of 27.7% in 182 innings.
Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake, known for helping pitchers maximize their potential, will work to refine Arias’ mechanics and harness his raw talent.
“He’s got the stuff to be a difference-maker,” a source close to the team said. “If the Yankees can get his command in check, he could be a key piece for the bullpen as early as 2025.”

Arias joins a revamped relief corps that already includes closer Devin Williams and strikeout specialist Fernando Cruz.
With open roster spots, the Yankees took a low-risk, high-reward gamble on Arias, betting their player development staff can unlock his potential.
One league insider remarked, “Letting Arias go was a head-scratcher for the Cubs. The Yankees may have just landed another bullpen gem.”
