Reports: NY Mets & Alonso "Still Nowhere", Teams Demands A Decision

Baseball insiders in New York are telling us that time is running short for free agent Pete Alonso's chances of remaining with the Mets. Andy Martino of SNY put the team's impatience with it all quite bluntly:

The Mets and Pete Alonso are still nowhere, and time is getting short.

According to Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman in the New York Post, the team is demanding a resolution "soon" or they will move on.

There was no word by Wednesday that the sides have closed the substantial financial hurdle that’s hung over these high-profile talks regarding the star free-agent first baseman.

And the Mets have let Alonso’s camp know they need a decision — and soon.

It appears that the structure of a deal is within range, with a three-year contract with at least one opt-out being discussed. But there's still a wide gap in the money.

Time is of the essence, as the Mets will need to pivot to other plans if they can't work out a deal with Alonso, while Polar Bear will need time to come out of hibernation himself and find another contract elsewhere if a deal can't be found in New York.

It's not known at this time if the Mets have set a firm deadline, but they have "heightened the call for a resolution one way or the other", before other potential options on the market slip away. Some of the names the Mets could pivot to include slugger Anthony Santander, or top reliever Tanner Scott. But those names, too, could go by the wayside if a decision doesn't come soon.
