Report: MLB Exec Reveals What Team Can Offer Alex Bregman Most Money

The Toronto Blue Jays are emerging as the favorites to sign free agent Alex Bregman, with an MLB executive suggesting they are “in position to offer the most money, given their level of desperation.”

According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, the Blue Jays are motivated by a pressing need to contend in 2025 as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. nears free agency.

After falling short in bids for stars like Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto, and most recently Roki Sasaki, Toronto views Bregman as a crucial addition to strengthen their roster and bolster their postseason aspirations.

Bregman, 30, remains one of the most sought-after free agents despite some statistical decline. A two-time World Series champion and 2024 Gold Glove winner, he slashed .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs last season, maintaining his reputation as a reliable everyday player.

The Blue Jays, who relied on Ernie Clement at third base in 2024, see Bregman as a big upgrade both offensively and defensively.

With other teams like the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and Chicago Cubs expressing interest, Toronto’s ability to outbid rivals could prove decisive.

“It just takes one team to make the right offer,” Olney noted, and the Blue Jays appear poised to make that offer.

Reports indicate that the Houston Astros proposed a deal similar to the six-year, $156 million contract Matt Chapman signed with the San Francisco Giants, but Toronto's willingness to spend aggressively could tip the scales.
