Report: Cubs Eyeing Another Top Free Agent
The Chicago Cubs are zeroing in on free-agent reliever Carlos Estévez as their next major bullpen target in an effort to shore up a big weakness for 2025.
According to MLB Network insider Jon Morosi, the Cubs are among several teams pursuing Estévez, with the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Cincinnati Reds also in the mix.
Estévez, 32, is coming off a stellar 2024 season split between the Los Angeles Angels and Philadelphia Phillies, posting a 2.45 ERA, 26 saves, and a 0.91 WHIP over 54 appearances.
With premier relievers like Tanner Scott, Jeff Hoffman, and Clay Holmes already off the market, Estévez’s availability is drawing significant attention as teams seek proven late-game options.

Despite Estévez’s strong track record, some question whether his performance is sustainable. His .229 BABIP in 2024 was a career low and well below league averages, sparking concerns of regression.
Additionally, his second-half FIP rose to 3.79, suggesting his results benefited from favorable circumstances.
The Cubs, who saw a similar situation unfold with Héctor Neris after a big signing last offseason, are weighing the risks carefully. “Adding a veteran with closing experience like Estévez makes sense for Chicago,” one analyst noted, especially as they look to reduce the pressure on second-year pitcher Porter Hodge, who remains untested as a full-time closer.
Carlos Estévez’s free agent market is intensifying, following the Tanner Scott and A.J. Minter signings in recent days.

President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer has showed the Cubs’ willingness to spend aggressively on bullpen upgrades, evidenced by their runner-up bid for Tanner Scott’s $72 million deal.
Estévez is projected to command a three-year, $27 million contract—well within Chicago’s budget—and would provide the stabilizing presence the team lacked during a season where they blew 26 saves.
