Report: Alonso & Blue Jays “Close” To 3-Year Deal

It looks like the divorce between the New York Mets and Pete Alonso is closer than ever. Mets insider Andy Martino reports that talks are "advancing" between Alonso and the Toronto Blue Jays.

A further report, earlier in the day from a New York Post editor, indicated that a three-year, $75 million contract framework is "close", which is just a few million north of the last known talks between Alonso and the Mets.

Would the Mets let their longtime slugger walk over a few million? It doesn't make a lot of sense, given the way owner Steve Cohen has thrown his money around.

It was about a week ago that the team was said to be starting to pivot away from their power-packed first baseman, as they wanted some certainty about being able to fill in other roster spots and signing other deals if he was not returning.

Would Alonso give the Mets a last chance to match? Likely, but it's not known what stage of disrepair that relationship is exactly in right now.

Pete's notorious agent, Scott Boras, had him turn down a 7-year, $158 million extension offer from the Mets last year, yet another example of the Boras greed costing his client tens and tens of millions of dollars.

Alonso would add a huge power surge to the Blue Jays lineup if this deal comes through, as he has the second most home runs in baseball going back to the 2019 season.

The 30-year-old is a four-time All-Star in his six major league seasons, with a career .854 OPS and 134 OPS+. Last year, his numbers across the board were the lowest in his career, from HR (34) to RBIs (88) to OPS (.788).
