Proposed Trade Sends Nolan Arenado To Red Sox

A proposed trade by Zachary Rymer of Bleacher Report envisions a blockbuster deal sending Nolan Arenado to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for designated hitter Masataka Yoshida and top prospect Yoeilin Cespedes.

Arenado, a 10-time Gold Glove winner, has reportedly identified Boston as his "preferred trade destination," according to MassLive.com

Bringing years of elite defense and a reliable bat, Arenado would bring stability to Boston's infield while adding a strong right-handed presence to a lefty-heavy lineup. The move would likely see Rafael Devers shift to first base, improving the team’s infield defense and opening the designated hitter role for younger talent like Triston Casas.

For the St. Louis Cardinals, the trade would bring financial relief by clearing Arenado's $64 million commitment while acquiring Yoshida, who has $55.8 million remaining on his deal, and the 19-year-old Cespedes, a promising prospect with long-term potential.

This deal could be a pivot for the Cardinals as they look to reshape their roster after a disappointing 2024 season. Adding Yoshida gives an immediate replacement in the lineup, while Cespedes could strengthen the team’s farm system for the future.

The trade would address big needs for both teams. Boston gains a cornerstone player to lead their infield and fuel a playoff push, while St. Louis begins to retool for long-term stability.

As Rymer notes, the deal provides "mutual benefits" for two clubs looking to improve their trajectories heading into the new season.
