Free Agent Signing: Pirates Bring Back Their Own Former All-Star

The Pittsburgh Pirates are trying to inch their way back into contention this season with some exciting talent dotting the rotation and the overall lineup. Today, they've added a veteran former All-Star to the mix, signing Adam Frazier.

It is a one-year major league contract for Frazier, and a reunion for the infielder/outfielder who spent half of his All-Star season of 2021 in Pittsburgh.

Now 33, Frazier batted .324 in his 98 games there that year, with an .836 OPS.

He has struggled since then to recapture his mojo, spending last season with the Kansas City Royals, where he posted the lowest OPS (.576) and OPS+ (63) of his nine-year career. He also batted just .202.

He spent 2022 and 2023 with the Seattle Mariners and Baltimore Orioles, with only slightly better results, but maintaining an OPS well below league average.

Frazier has been largely a second baseman in his major league career, but also has played the outfield semi-regularly. He'll hope to regain his status as an impact player back in the ballpark of his greatest successes.
