MLB Trade Rumors: NY Mets Would Land Pablo Lopez in Trade Proposal

While there's been a lot of talk about Luis Castillo being a top starting pitcher on the trade market these days, it sounds like there's another top-end of the rotation arm that could be available. Are the Minnesota Twins thinking of dealing Pablo Lopez?

Lopez earns $21.7 million for each of the next three seasons, which is a fair deal given the skyrocketing price of big-name starters. Insider Jeff Passan says that while the pitcher isn't being "shopped", the Twins are listening.

One team that would have great interest would be the New York Mets. At least that's the word according to insider Zachary Rymer of Bleacher Report. He suggests the following deal would get Lopez to Queens:

New York Mets Receive:

  • Pablo Lopez, RHP
  • C Christian Vázquez
Minnesota Twins Receive:
  • David Peterson, LHP
  • SS Jett Williams (Mets No. 2 prospect)
  • OF Drew Gilbert (Mets No. 7 prospect)

That would be a nice haul for the Twins to consider, landing two of the Mets' top seven prospects, and a reliable replacement in the rotation in Peterson, who fashioned a career-best 2.90 ERA in 21 starts in 2024.

And if that's not enough, maybe deep-pocketed Mets owner Steve Cohen would even consider taking on a Twins unwanted contract to help them out.

The Mets have seemingly already shored up their rotation this winter, signing Sean Manaea, Frankie Montas and reliever-turned-starter Clay Holmes off the free agent market, to join Kodai Senga. But, per Rymer, that's "one card short of a full deck." Lopez could be the ace they draw off the bottom of the deck in this hypothetical deal.
