MLB Rumors: Update On Alex Bregman's Free Agency Situation

The Houston Astros have reengaged in discussions with free agent third baseman Alex Bregman, reviving hopes for a reunion with one of the team’s most impactful players.

After earlier talks stalled in December, Houston’s interest was renewed as uncertainty about Bregman’s market created an opening. According to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome, concerns within the clubhouse about losing Bregman’s leadership and presence on the field played a big role in the team revisiting negotiations.

The 30-year-old, who hit .260 with 26 home runs in 2024, has drawn attention from the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, and Detroit Tigers, but none have reportedly matched Houston’s six-year, $156 million offer. “He made this entire organization better than where we actually were before him,” longtime teammate Jose Altuve said.

Bregman’s return would come amid huge changes to Houston’s roster this offseason. The team traded Kyle Tucker to the Cubs, acquiring All-Star third baseman Isaac Paredes, and signed first baseman Christian Walker to a three-year, $60 million deal.

If Bregman re-signs, Houston is exploring moving Paredes to second base and transitioning Altuve to left field, a move prompted by Altuve’s declining defensive range.

Financially, the Astros are already $2.5 million over the first luxury tax threshold and are reportedly exploring options like trading setup man Ryan Pressly to manage payroll.

Crane has historically been reluctant to exceed the tax line but has made exceptions for key players.
