MLB Rumors: Phillies Considering Signing Alex Verdugo?

The Philadelphia Phillies, looking to address their postseason shortcomings and return as a top contender, are reportedly considering Alex Verdugo as a free-agent option to add to their outfield.

After making some big offseason moves, including the additions of Max Kepler, Jordan Romano, and Jesús Luzardo, Verdugo could be a potential low-risk, high-reward signing.

The 28-year-old outfielder struggled with the New York Yankees in 2024, hitting just .233 with 13 home runs and 61 RBIs, but some believe a change of scenery could spark a resurgence. Drew VonScio of Newsweek noted, “The power alley would be 16 feet shorter [at Citizens Bank Park], and that should help boost Verdugo’s home run numbers.”

If brought in, Verdugo would compete with Kepler for playing time in left field or provide valuable depth given Kepler’s injury history.

Verdugo’s defensive metrics remain a strong selling point, ranking in the 96th percentile for arm value and 94th for arm strength last season. However, critics question whether he can truly be a game-changer after declining in key areas such as Outs Above Average and offensive consistency.

Even so, his left-handed bat and reputation as a steady clubhouse presence make him a compelling option for a team looking to solidify its outfield.

While Verdugo is a clear focus, some argue the Phillies might find a better fit by trading for Jesús Sánchez of the Miami Marlins. Sánchez, whose raw power and untapped potential led to 18 home runs in 2024, is under club control through 2027 and could thrive in Philadelphia’s hitter-friendly ballpark.

Despite the intrigue surrounding Sánchez, Verdugo remains an attractive candidate, particularly if he’s willing to sign a short-term deal to prove he can bounce back.
