MLB Rumors: 3 Teams Eyeing Alex Verdugo

Alex Verdugo has become a focal point of MLB free agency, drawing interest from the New York Mets, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Toronto Blue Jays.

After a season with the New York Yankees where he displayed defensive versatility and recorded eight defensive runs saved in left field, per FanGraphs, Verdugo is seen as a reliable outfield option for teams looking to improve their roster.

The Pirates have emerged as a surprising contender for Verdugo, with MassLive’s Chris Cotillo calling them "a team to watch." However, competing with the deeper pockets of the Mets and Blue Jays may prove challenging for Pittsburgh.

For the Mets, Verdugo is a cost-effective addition to an outfield that already includes Juan Soto, Brandon Nimmo, and Starling Marte.

New York values his ability to play all three outfield positions while providing steady production. “If the Mets sign Verdugo and get that version of him next season, it’s a huge win,” Dylan Backer of SNY wrote, referring to his consistent offensive output during his time with the Red Sox.

Despite a down year offensively in 2024, where he slashed .233/.291/.356 with 13 home runs and 61 RBIs, the Mets see Verdugo as a low-risk, high-reward opportunity.

Pittsburgh GM Ben Cherington is intrigued by Verdugo’s defensive reliability and offensive potential, viewing him as a cornerstone player in the team’s push for postseason contention.

Toronto, seeking a left-handed bat to balance their right-heavy lineup, views Verdugo as a solution to pair with Daulton Varsho and George Springer after missing out on Juan Soto.
