MLB Rumors: 2 Teams Pursuing Free Agent Yoan Moncada
The Chicago Cubs and Seattle Mariners are reportedly among the teams pursuing free-agent third baseman Yoán Moncada, according to Francys Romero.
Moncada, a switch-hitter with eight years of MLB experience, has struggled with injuries in recent seasons but offers upside when healthy.
At 29, he is seeking a one-year deal to rebuild his value, and his ability to play both third and second base makes him an attractive option for teams looking to solidify their infields. Despite his recent struggles, Moncada has flashed star potential, including a breakout 2019 season with 25 home runs and a .315 batting average.

The third baseman market continues to wait on what happens with Alex Bregman.
For the Mariners, Moncada could address their wide-open competition at third base, a position without a clear starter heading into 2025.
His ability to play every day could fill a key need for a team seeking more offensive consistency. However, his 29.4% strikeout rate over the past two seasons and a history of injuries may prompt some caution.
Still, with limited free-agent options available, the Mariners see Moncada as a strong candidate to bolster their infield and provide a left-handed bat in their lineup.

The Cubs, meanwhile, view Moncada as a potential solution to their infield uncertainties.
With Nico Hoerner recovering from offseason flexor tendon surgery and top prospect Matt Shaw needing to “earn” a starting role in spring training, according to President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer, Moncada could provide nice competition and stability.
His switch-hitting ability adds balance to a predominantly right-handed infield, while his experience would bring depth to a lineup looking to contend in 2025
