Scherzer, now 40 years old, spent an injury-riddled season with the Texas Rangers in 2024, after being dealt there by the New York Mets in 2023.
The more intriguing question going forward is, 'Is this move enough for the Jays to be able to entice Scherzer's former teammate Pete Alonso to jump with him to Toronto?' The Jays and Mets are still in a showdown for the slugger's services.
As for Scherzer, he was only able to start nine games last year with Texas, battling hamstring and shoulder injuries—and that's after he underwent back surgery.
In his nine starts, he had a 3.95 ERA (101 ERA+) in 43 ⅓ innings. He struck out 40 batters and posted a 1.15 WHIP.
Scherzer isn't known as Mad Max for nothing. The uber-competitive hurler was determined not to have his career end on such a sour note, so he'll give it another shot, with a pretty good defensive team behind him.
On the offensive front? That's still to be determined...
Scherzer has three Cy Young awards to his credit, in 2013, 2016 and 2017 while with the Washington Nationals. He's an 8-time All-Star and a two-time World Series winner (2019 & 2023).
