Insider: "Good Chance" Max Scherzer Ends Up With This Club

Insider Jon Heyman has suggested there’s a “decent chance” that veteran pitcher Max Scherzer signs with the Toronto Blue Jays this offseason.

Speaking on MLB Network’s Hot Stove, Heyman revealed that Scherzer recently held a Zoom meeting with the team and made his priorities clear. “I think he basically told them, ‘Look, I want to win – you guys won 74 games last year. Let’s see what the roster is before I decide what I wanna do,’” Heyman said.

Toronto has been active in addressing its roster needs, adding All-Stars Anthony Santander and Jeff Hoffman, and their ongoing efforts reportedly intrigue the three-time Cy Young winner.

Scherzer is coming off a challenging 2024 season in which injuries limited him to just nine starts, posting a 3.94 ERA over 43.1 innings.

Despite his recent setbacks, the veteran remains one of the most sought-after free agents. Heyman noted that Scherzer would be a strong fit for Toronto, especially if the team lands another key piece like slugger Pete Alonso to bolster their lineup.

“If they sign Alonso, that’s a pretty good middle of the order. I think they underachieved at 74 wins, anyway, and they certainly are a contender,” Heyman explained.

With Alek Manoah recovering from Tommy John surgery and Ricky Tiedemann still developing, the Blue Jays are eager to solidify their rotation behind Kevin Gausman and José Berríos.

Heyman believes Toronto is currently the most likely destination for Scherzer, especially if their offseason moves convince him of their potential to contend.
