Chicago White Sox Make Surprising DFA

The Chicago White Sox have designated reliever Ron Marinaccio for assignment to create space on their 40-man roster for newly signed veteran left-hander Martín Pérez.

Marinaccio, 29, was claimed off waivers from the New York Yankees in late September but never made an appearance for Chicago. Over three seasons with New York, he compiled a solid 3.22 ERA with 10.8 strikeouts per nine innings, including a standout rookie campaign in 2022 when he posted a 2.05 ERA in 40 outings.

Despite his success, the White Sox opted to move in a different direction as they focus on bolstering their starting rotation.

Martín Pérez, 33, arrives on a one-year, $5 million deal, bringing a wealth of experience to Chicago’s pitching staff. A 2022 All-Star with the Texas Rangers, Pérez recorded a career-best 2.89 ERA that season and contributed to Texas’ 2023 World Series title.

Last year, he split time between the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres, reinforcing his reputation as a durable and reliable starter.

The White Sox view Pérez as a stabilizing presence in their rotation, prioritizing his proven track record over Marinaccio’s potential upside.

While Marinaccio showed flashes of dominance, particularly in Triple-A last season with a 2.04 ERA, 0.983 WHIP, and eight saves, he struggled to maintain consistency in limited MLB action in 2024.

“Ron has shown he can pitch effectively, but we felt this move was necessary to address our rotation needs,” a team source explained.

Marinaccio will now await his next opportunity via trade, waiver claim, or outright assignment, as the White Sox turn their focus to assembling a competitive roster for 2025.
