Baltimore Orioles Sign Former Top Prospect

The Baltimore Orioles have signed outfielder Dylan Carlson to a one-year major league contract worth $975,000, with an additional $25,000 incentive if he reaches 200 plate appearances in 2025.

Carlson, 26, was non-tendered by the Tampa Bay Rays after splitting the 2024 season between Tampa Bay and St. Louis.

Once a highly regarded prospect and a 2021 NL Rookie of the Year finalist, Carlson has struggled to recapture his early success due to injuries and inconsistency. In 2024, he played 96 games, hitting .209 with three home runs and 25 RBIs while dealing with a shoulder issue sustained in Spring Training.

Despite his recent struggles, Carlson’s switch-hitting ability and versatility in the outfield make him an appealing signing for the Orioles.

Bringing solid numbers against left-handed pitching, he boasts a career .285 average and .792 OPS versus southpaws, providing a potential platoon option in Baltimore’s revamped outfield.

With Anthony Santander departing in free agency, Carlson joins Cedric Mullins, Colton Cowser, Tyler O’Neill, and top prospect Heston Kjerstad in a competitive outfield mix.

Orioles GM Mike Elias expressed optimism, stating, “We see a lot of untapped potential in Dylan, and we’re excited to give him a fresh opportunity here in Baltimore.”

The Orioles designated infielder Jacob Amaya for assignment to accommodate the signing.

Carlson now has the opportunity to compete for a significant role in Spring Training, with the team hopeful he can rediscover the form that once made him one of the league’s most promising young players.
