Baltimore Orioles Claim Former Top-10 Prospect Off Waivers
Amaya, 26, was designated for assignment by Chicago last week after the White Sox signed Josh Rojas. To accommodate the move, the Orioles designated pitcher Roansy Contreras for assignment, continuing their efforts to fine-tune the back end of their 40-man roster.

Amaya has built a reputation as a steady defender, boasting over 4,500 professional innings at shortstop and more than 1,000 at second base.
While his offensive production in the majors has been limited—hitting .182 across 28 games with the Miami Marlins, Houston Astros, and Chicago White Sox over the past two seasons—his minor league track record is more encouraging.
Amaya carries a career .251 batting average and .353 on-base percentage in the minors, coupled with solid defensive metrics. With Jorge Mateo recovering from elbow surgery, Amaya provides depth and could compete for a utility role during spring training.
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde remarked, “Amaya gives us another option up the middle, which is critical as we navigate injuries and prepare for a competitive season.”

He has played 28 MLB games over past 2 seasons -- 4 for Marlins in '23, 1 for Astros in '24, 23 for White Sox in '24. Owns a .182/.222/.195 career slash line. https://t.co/srMud6XDd2
Though Amaya faces steep competition for a spot on the Opening Day roster with established infielders like Gunnar Henderson, Jackson Holliday, and Jordan Westburg, his presence offers valuable insurance.
The Orioles’ infield depth positions them well for flexibility throughout the season, and Amaya’s strong defensive skills could make him a useful short-term contributor.
