Athletics Sign Right-Handed Pitcher With Elite Strikeout Rate

The Oakland Athletics have added veteran right-handed reliever José Leclerc to their bullpen, signing him to a one-year, $10 million deal.

Leclerc, 31, brings a wealth of experience after spending his entire career with the Texas Rangers, compiling a 3.27 ERA across eight seasons.

Bringing a strong strikeout ability and limiting hard contact, Leclerc struck out 89 batters in 66.2 innings last season, with advanced metrics like a 3.48 FIP and a 30.7% hard-hit rate (96th percentile) pointing to his continued effectiveness despite a 4.32 ERA.

“José brings valuable experience and a proven track record to our bullpen,” the Athletics said in a statement, signaling their confidence in his impact.

Leclerc’s skill set includes a 95-96 mph fastball and a sharp slider, which held hitters to a .221 average in 2024, complemented by a cutter, sinker, and changeup.

Having played a crucial role in the Rangers’ 2023 World Series run, Leclerc offers a proven ability to handle high-pressure situations.

The Athletics plan to use him in a high-leverage role alongside All-Star closer Mason Miller, with the added flexibility to pitch multiple innings.

His improved control since returning from Tommy John surgery in 2021, including a reduced walk rate of 11.3% over the past three seasons, makes him a more reliable option for critical moments.

This move reflects Oakland’s active offseason, which has included the signings of Luis Severino and Jeffrey Springs, as well as an extension for Brent Rooker.

While Leclerc strengthens their bullpen, his one-year contract also positions him as a potential trade piece if the Athletics fall short of playoff contention.
