2-Time All-Star Tim Anderson Signs Free Agent Deal

Tim Anderson was a two-time All-Star shortstop in 2021 and 2022, and a vocal team leader for the Chicago White Sox. But he has had a precipitous fall from grace in the last two seasons, with his production plummeting off a cliff to the point where he was placed on waivers last July by the lowly Miami Marlins.

Out of the majors since then, he has found himself a free agent contract—a minor league deal—with the Los Angeles Angels.

Anderson was signed by Miami last year to a one-year, $5 million deal after the White Sox declined his $14 million option after the 2023 season.

But he hit just .214 for the Fish in 65 games, with zero homers, a .463 OPS and an OPS+ of 27. Yes, twenty-seven. That's 73% worse than the average hitter.

It's a far cry from his glory days, when Anderson went through a terrific four-year stretch on the South Side of Chicago:

  • 2019: Major League batting champ with .335 average
  • 2020: .322 average with .886 OPS, 140 OPS+, 7th in MVP balloting
  • 2021: All-Star, batted .309, 94 runs, .806 OPS
  • 2022: All-Star, batted .301

Then came 2023, when he continued his significant decline, with a .245 batting average and just a single home run with a .296 slugging. Things got even worse with Miami last year.

Anderson, 31, is hoping he can find his game again with the Angels. He'll get an invite to spring training.
