Top 5 MLB Free Agents Still Available (& Best Fit For Each)

Several big-name free agents came off the board over the holiday season, leaving, essentially, five big MLB names left on the free agent market.

With the help of insider Jon Heyman, let's take a look at the top 5 still available, and the best fit for each.

Alex Bregman, 3B

The former Houston Astros mainstay has essentially been locked out of his incumbent team after their acquisitions of 1B Christian Walker and 3B Isaac Parades this offseason. Bregman's contract demands are out of the Astros' comfort zone.

Heyman says either the Detroit Tigers, with his old Astros manager A.J. Hinch, and the Boston Red Sox, with his old Astros coach Alex Cora, would be the most likely fits.

Pete Alonso, 1B

The best fit for the Mets' longtime slugger is still... The Mets. Most other teams who had needed a first baseman have made other accommodations already this winter. And with the team's massive signing of Juan Soto, why weaken the lineup by letting Alonso go?

Anthony Santander, OF

The Orioles' slugger had a boffo contract year, blasting a career-high 44 homers. Heyman says that the Toronto Blue Jays "are nearly everyone’s best guess."

Jack Flaherty, SP

The one-time ace returned to elite status in 2024 after years of injury troubles. Flaherty established a return to his dominant self with the Tigers, then helped the Dodgers get to a World Series title. While no contenders seem to be biting on Flaherty, we could see the Los Angeles Angels shelling out the big money to add him to their rotation.

Tanner Scott, RP

One of baseball's best closers is still out there for the taking, and he's coming off a 1.75 ERA, 10.5 K/9 and his first All-Star game. The Philadelphia Phillies love loading up on as many elite options in their bullpen as they can each season. They've already signed free agent Jordan Romano to a one-year deal, could Scott be next to give them a devastating 1-2 punch?
