Top 3 Destinations for In-Demand Closer Tanner Scott
Now that Devin Williams has been dealt, Tanner Scott is the most desirable of the available closer options around the sport. All he did last year is record 41 saves with a stunning 1.75 ERA and 10.5 K/9. And trying to muster hard contact off the left-hander was next to impossible. He finished in the 100th percentile in limiting exit velocity and the 99th in limiting Hard-Hit %.
So what are the ideal fits for the former Miami Marlin and San Diego Padre? There is "widespread interest" in the southpaw, per baseball insider Robert Murray. We take a look at the top 3 fits:
Los Angeles Dodgers
There is mutual interest between the Dodgers and Scott, per Murray. "I think Scott is the natural pivot point here for the Dodgers... I think the fit makes a lot of sense, and there is absolute interest between both sides."
The Dodgers know how important an excellent bullpen is if they want to defend their World Series championship, and according to reports, they're already considering a $60+ million offer to bring Scott in to Chavez Ravine.
Texas Rangers
It would be a shock if the Rangers don't make a big play for Scott, if they don't want to bring back their 2024 closer, Kirby Yates. After a renaissance season, Yates is a free agent, and at age-37, the Rangers might not want to invest multiple years. Scott is seven years younger and in his prime. Currently, their depth chart shows their closer for 2025 to be... Jacob Webb? Matt Festa? Huh?
Arizona Diamondbacks
The Snakes have some solid arms at the back end of the bullpen, but for the moment, no closer. Paul Sewald, who spent much of 2024 on the injured list, is now a free agent. With Justin Martinez, A.J. Puk and Kevin Ginkel, they have the depth to get them to the 9th, but Scott would be an ideal addition to come in and slam the door.
