Report: Leading Contender For Alex Bregman Revealed

The New York Mets have emerged as one of the leading contenders for free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

Fresh off their blockbuster acquisition of Juan Soto, the Mets are looking to continue their aggressive offseason and add another proven star to their roster. Bregman, a two-time World Series champion and 2024 Gold Glove winner, slashed .260/.315/.453 last season with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs.

The Houston Astros have reportedly offered him a six-year, $156 million contract to stay, but the Mets’ deep pockets under owner Steve Cohen could give them a decisive edge.

Bregman’s potential arrival raises questions about Pete Alonso’s future in Queens. The Mets remain in talks to retain the All-Star first baseman, but competition from the Yankees could complicate negotiations.

If Alonso departs, the team could shift Mark Vientos to first base, while Bregman would solidify third base alongside shortstop Francisco Lindor, forming one of baseball’s best defensive left sides.

Former Mets general manager Steve Phillips told MLB Network that negotiations could be “a juggling act” for the Mets’ front office, given that both Bregman and Alonso are represented by agent Scott Boras. “Signing one could affect what happens with the other,” Phillips said.

The Mets appear well-positioned compared to rivals like the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Toronto Blue Jays, and Houston Astros.

Bregman’s struggles at Yankee Stadium, where he has hit just .207 with a .359 slugging percentage, might make Citi Field a more appealing destination.

Pairing him with Soto would create a dynamic middle of the lineup, strengthening the Mets’ pursuit of a title in 2025.
