Report: Astros Make Largest Contract Offer In Franchise History To Alex Bregman

The Houston Astros have made their largest contract offer in franchise history to retain All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman, presenting a six-year, $156 million deal.

Despite the significant commitment, Bregman, represented by agent Scott Boras, is reportedly seeking a contract exceeding $200 million.

This gap creates a difficult decision for the Astros, whose owner, Jim Crane, has historically been cautious about long-term, high-value deals.

“You have to be cognizant of that because the longer the contracts on the back end, it gets difficult to carry it,” Crane explained, referencing the organization’s financial strategy. The Astros have managed to remain competitive even after letting stars like Carlos Correa and George Springer leave in free agency.

Bregman has been a pivotal figure in Houston’s success over the last decade, contributing both on the field and in the clubhouse.

His 2024 season included a .260 batting average, 26 home runs, 75 RBIs, and his first career Gold Glove Award.

Manager Joe Espada emphasized Bregman’s value to the team, stating, “Breggy is a winner; he’s a leader. He has all the qualities you’re looking for from a baseball player. Hopefully, we can get it done.”

While the Astros hope to reach an agreement, teams like the Detroit Tigers, reportedly willing to offer $225 million, as well as the Philadelphia Phillies and Toronto Blue Jays, could make compelling bids if Bregman tests the market.

If Bregman declines the offer, the Astros are prepared to pivot.

Potential free-agent targets include Jorge Polanco, a versatile switch-hitter, and Christian Walker, a power-hitting first baseman with three Gold Glove awards and an OPS above .800 in 2024.

Crane reiterated that the organization’s focus remains on sustainable success, stating, “We run it like a business, and we make good decisions.”
