Report: Arenado Could Follow Goldschmidt to AL East

They anchored the St. Louis Cardinals infield from the corners for the past four years together—Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado. Now could one multi-time All-Star and Gold Glover follow the other to the Bronx to do the same with the New York Yankees?

Mark Feinsand, Bryan Hoch and John Denton of mlb.com are reporting that is definitely on the table:

Sources added that the veteran first baseman (Goldschmidt)’s ...presence in New York could have a strong influence on former teammate Nolan Arenado waiving his no-trade clause and agreeing to play for the Yankees if New York pursues a trade with St. Louis for the 10-time Gold Glove winner.

Adding more fuel to the rumor, the insiders added that the Yankees had already tried to pry Arenado loose from the Cardinals before the 2024 trade deadline, but their offer of starting pitcher Marcus Stroman was turned down by St. Louis.

Arenado is already known to have blocked a trade to another potential American League contender, so he is certainly willing to use his no-trade clause if necessary.

The 8-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove third baseman has seen his production dip over the past couple of seasons. The 33-year-old posted 16 home runs and a .719 OPS in '24, both his lowest numbers since his rookie season 11 years before. But he still managed an OPS+ just a tick over league average, at 101. And he can still pick it at the hot corner with the best of them.

Third base has been another trouble spot for the Yankees, so it makes sense that their interest could still be there.
