Phillies Sign Versatile Pitcher After Impressive 2024 Season

The Philadelphia Phillies have continued to bolster their pitching staff with the signing of veteran right-hander Joe Ross to a one-year, $4 million contract.

Ross, 31, joins the team after an impressive 2024 campaign with the Milwaukee Brewers, where he posted a 3.77 ERA across 74 innings.

Splitting time between starting and relief roles, Ross excelled as a reliever, recording a dominant 1.67 ERA in 15 bullpen appearances. His ability to succeed in multiple roles makes him a valuable addition to a Phillies pitching staff undergoing a lot of changes this offseason.

This signing follows Philadelphia's recent moves to reshape their roster, including trading for left-hander Jesús Luzardo and signing reliever Jordan Romano.

With Luzardo expected to strengthen the rotation and Romano anchoring the bullpen, Ross brings much-needed flexibility and experience. "Joe’s versatility and experience are exactly what we need," said Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski.

"He showed last year with Milwaukee that he can adapt and perform in different situations, and we’re excited to have him on board." Ross fills a swingman role previously held by Spencer Turnbull and could help offset the potential losses of free agents Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estévez.

A former World Series champion with the Nationals, Ross brings veteran leadership and resilience, having successfully returned from Tommy John surgery in 2024.

To make room for him on the roster, the Phillies designated José Cuas for assignment.
