New York Mets Sign Former All-Star Closer
Once one of baseball's most promising pitching prospects, Reyes debuted with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2016 and impressed with a 1.57 ERA over 46 innings.
However, his career was derailed by multiple injuries, including Tommy John surgery and shoulder issues that required surgeries in 2022 and 2023. Despite this, Reyes' career numbers remain impressive, with a 2.86 ERA and 177 strikeouts in 145 innings.

Reyes last pitched in 2021, when he served as the Cardinals’ closer, saving 29 games and earning an All-Star nod.
Known for his electric stuff, he struck out 30.3% of batters faced that year, though late-season control issues and subsequent shoulder injuries sidelined him. Now reportedly healthy, the Mets view him as a low-risk, high-reward addition to their bullpen depth.
"If he can get back in form, he’ll be found money," said a source familiar with the deal. The signing is part of the Mets’ offseason strategy of targeting veterans on short-term deals or minor league contracts, with Reyes joining pitchers like Clay Holmes and Frankie Montas as reclamation projects.

With pitching coach Jeremy Hefner’s track record of helping pitchers rebound, the Mets hope Reyes can rediscover the form that once made him a star.
If Reyes proves effective in spring training, he could become a key bullpen piece for a Mets team looking to contend in 2025.
