MLB Trade Rumors: Twins "Open to Listening" on Carlos Correa
A report in The Athletic suggests that there will be "increased trade chatter" at baseball's Winter Meetings on the Minnesota Twins' Carlos Correa.
Given the Twins’ precarious self-imposed financial position, it’s only natural for teams with bigger revenue streams to go fishing and see if they can pick off a player like Correa, who could be a difference-maker on a championship-caliber club.
The Twins are a small market team with a tight salary structure. And after a disappointing 4th place finish in 2024, freeing up all of Correa's money could allow them to strengthen the roster in many other areas.
President of baseball operations Derek Falvey, however, says that while he is open to listening to offers, he isn’t looking to "simply shed Correa’s salary".
The Twins' budget is set to be $130 million for the 2025 season, and they're currently about $10 million over.
Meanwhile, Correa, the $200 million shortstop ($37M next season) has not been able to stay healthy in his three seasons in Minneapolis, playing just 86 games last season due to plantar fasciitis. He did have a .905 OPS when he played. He slashed .310/.388/.517 with 14 home runs and 54 RBIs in 367 plate appearances.
"He’s a leader. He’s a key member of the clubhouse," said Falvey. "Obviously, you expect teams to call on players like that, especially with where we are and some of the conversations we’re having with other clubs. But we want to win, so a high bar is set.”
