MLB Rumors: Yankees "In Talks" With Christian Walker

The New York Yankees are in advanced discussions with free-agent first baseman Christian Walker as they look to strengthen their lineup after losing out on Juan Soto to the New York Mets.

Walker, 33, has become a priority for the Yankees thanks to his combination of power at the plate and elite defensive skills, earning three consecutive Gold Gloves at first base.

In 2024, he hit .251 with 26 home runs, 84 RBIs, and an .803 OPS, while also excelling defensively with league-leading metrics among first basemen.

“He’s really athletic, and he’s been on a World Series team,” said MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, referencing Walker’s experience with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Yankees’ need for a first baseman became clear after they declined Anthony Rizzo’s $17 million option and struggled with Ben Rice, who posted a .171 batting average during an extended look in 2024.

Walker is seen as a perfect fit, offering a proven bat and glove without requiring the long-term commitment of other marquee names like Pete Alonso.

MLB Trade Rumors projects Walker to command a three-year, $60 million deal, a manageable figure that would allow the Yankees to address other roster needs.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post also praised Walker as an “excellent clubhouse presence,” making him an appealing option for a team aiming to build on their AL pennant-winning campaign.

While the Washington Nationals and Houston Astros are also monitoring Walker’s availability, the Yankees appear to be leading the race for his signature.

With Walker, they hope to replace some of the offensive production lost in the Soto sweepstakes while improving their infield defense.
