MLB Rumors: Yankees Eyeing Two More Big Names

The New York Yankees are focusing their efforts on signing veteran first basemen Paul Goldschmidt and Carlos Santana after missing out on Christian Walker, who signed with the Houston Astros.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Yankees avoided Walker due to the draft pick compensation attached to his qualifying offer, leaving Goldschmidt and Santana as their top targets.

With Anthony Rizzo departing in free agency and rookie Ben Rice struggling with a .171 average over 50 games, the team is seeking a proven, reliable presence to solidify the infield and bolster their lineup.

Paul Goldschmidt, a seven-time All-Star and former MVP, brings extensive experience and leadership despite a dip in production last season with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The 37-year-old hit .245 with 22 home runs and 65 RBIs in 2024, and his defensive reliability adds further value. “The Yankees have shown strong interest in Goldschmidt,” Nightengale reported, though competition from teams like the Seattle Mariners, San Francisco Giants, and Washington Nationals could complicate negotiations.

The Yankees view Goldschmidt as a potential cornerstone in their quest for a championship after falling short in the World Series.

Carlos Santana, meanwhile, offers another compelling option with his versatility and power.

The 38-year-old switch hitter posted 23 home runs, 71 RBIs, and a .238 batting average for the Minnesota Twins last season, earning his first Gold Glove award.

Known as a steady contributor and respected clubhouse leader, Santana could provide a short-term solution while bridging the gap to younger prospects.

Having already added Cody Bellinger and Max Fried this offseason, the Yankees appear intent on continuing to fortify their roster for another deep postseason run.
