MLB Rumors: Pete Alonso On Giants' "Radar"

The San Francisco Giants have shifted their focus to Pete Alonso as they look to add to their lineup after falling short on key free agents like Corbin Burnes and Blake Snell.

According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Alonso has emerged as a top target for the Giants, who are "in the market" for a first baseman or designated hitter.

The four-time All-Star, known for his power, hit 34 home runs with 88 RBIs for the New York Mets in 2024 and has racked up 226 home runs over six seasons.

Adding Alonso would complement recent signings, including Willy Adames on a seven-year, $182 million deal and Matt Chapman, who inked a six-year, $151 million extension.

The Giants see Alonso as a potential anchor in the middle of their lineup, providing the power needed to compete in the stacked NL West.

LaMonte Wade Jr., their current first baseman, could shift to a platoon or designated hitter role if Alonso joins the team. Alonso’s reported decision to turn down a three-year, $90 million offer from the New York Mets leaves him available to aggressive suitors, including the Seattle Mariners and Toronto Blue Jays.

Giants President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey stated, "We will continue to look on the offensive side for players that give us a chance to score runs in multiple ways."

While the Giants have also been linked to pitchers like Roki Sasaki and Jack Flaherty, Alonso appears to be the centerpiece of their efforts to reshape their roster.

His addition would mark a significant move as San Francisco looks to challenge NL West rivals who have made major upgrades, such as Arizona signing Burnes and the Los Angeles Dodgers adding Blake Snell.

If the Giants succeed in landing Alonso, it could provide the spark needed to return to playoff contention after three consecutive missed postseasons.
