MLB Rumors: Guardians & Mariners Talking Trade?

The Seattle Mariners are going after offensive help this offseason, with Cleveland Guardians first baseman Josh Naylor emerging as a key trade target.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the two teams have engaged in discussions regarding Naylor, who is coming off a career-best season.

The 27-year-old slugger hit 31 home runs and drove in 108 RBIs in 2024, earning his first All-Star nod. His .243/.320/.456 slash line, coupled with a low 16.6% strikeout rate, makes him an attractive fit for a Mariners lineup that struggled with consistency and power last season.

Following Justin Turner’s departure, first base has become a priority for Seattle, and Naylor’s offensive profile aligns with their need for both power and efficiency.

Naylor is projected to earn $14.2 million in his final year of arbitration, making him a valuable trade chip as the Guardians aim to balance payroll and integrate top prospect Kyle Manzardo at first base.

While Cleveland remains committed to contention, recent moves, such as trading Andrés Giménez, indicate a willingness to make cost-conscious decisions. Reports suggest the Guardians are seeking a substantial return, likely targeting one of Seattle’s promising young pitchers, such as Bryan Woo or Bryce Miller.

Morosi noted that a potential deal isn’t imminent but could materialize quickly if the right package is offered.

Adding Naylor would fill a critical need for the Mariners, who ranked near the bottom in slugging percentage and missed the playoffs for a second consecutive year.

His ability to play first base or serve as a designated hitter would provide lineup flexibility and strengthen the core alongside Julio Rodríguez and Cal Raleigh.

Mariners executives Jerry Dipoto and Justin Hollander have expressed a preference for trades over free agency to address their offensive shortcomings. While alternatives like Christian Walker and Pete Alonso have been considered, Naylor’s one-year salary and All-Star production make him an appealing option for Seattle’s 2025 playoff aspirations.
