MLB Rumors: Alex Bregman Signing Imminent

The New York Yankees are closing in on a deal with free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman, positioning him as a cornerstone addition to their offseason plans.

According to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, the Yankees have “real” interest in the former Astros star, whose Gold Glove-winning defense and proven offensive capabilities make him an ideal fit for their infield. After losing Juan Soto to the Mets in free agency, New York shifted focus to Bregman, with manager Aaron Boone noting the value of adding a veteran presence to the infield while maintaining confidence in Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s versatility.

With Gleyber Torres potentially departing, Bregman’s arrival would solidify the hot corner and bring playoff pedigree to a team eager to contend in 2025.

Bregman, 30, comes off a 2024 season where he batted .260 with 26 home runs, 75 RBIs, and a .768 OPS, pairing consistent offense with elite defense.

While the Astros reportedly offered him a six-year, $156 million contract, Bregman is said to be seeking closer to $200 million over seven years.

Other suitors, including the Red Sox, Tigers, and Phillies, have expressed interest, but the Yankees are pushing aggressively, aided by financial flexibility after reallocating funds intended for Soto. “He’s a complete player... offensively, defensively, he impacts championship-caliber teams,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora, capturing the widespread league-wide interest in Bregman.

If finalized, Bregman’s signing would follow the Yankees’ blockbuster addition of pitcher Max Fried on an eight-year, $218 million contract.

Bregman’s leadership, versatility, and playoff experience would provide a major boost, positioning the Yankees as serious contenders for a deep postseason run in 2025.
