His Options Dwindling, 3 Potential Suitors Remain for Pete Alonso outside of Mets

Most of the big names in free agency have found new homes for 2025, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. With one big, glaring exception: Pete Alonso.

The New York Mets' longtime slugger is still out there twisting in the wind, as he and his agent Scott Boras are seemingly steadfast on getting themselves a $200 million deal. As reported by Jon Heyman on Thursday, "there is said to be a sizable gap in talks at the moment" between Alonso and the Mets.

The problem is, there aren't many other options left for Alonso. So many of the teams in need of a first baseman—the New York Yankees, Houston Astros, Cleveland Guardians, Arizona Diamondbacks and Washington Nationals have all signed or traded for a first baseman.

The Mets have offered something south of $200M, some say in the $160M range on a long-term deal for Polar Bear. But so far, he's been hibernating this winter, not ready to sign just yet.

Other than the Mets, here are three potential teams that could still have interest in Alonso, but also maybe not for his price.

San Francisco Giants

They finally made a big free agent splash after years of trying, signing shortstop Willy Adames to a massive 7-year, $182M contract—the largest in team history. Would they be willing to go in the same range again, or even higher, for Alonso?

Despite Oracle Park's penchant for being a graveyard for hitters, Alonso has actually done quite well there over the years, with seven homers in 17 career games, with a .910 OPS.

Texas Rangers

They dealt away Nate Lowe earlier this month, after having acquired the powerful Jake Burger, who will now likely serve as their starting first baseman, or, if they somehow find the money for Alonso (that is very much in question), Burger could move to DH and backup at 3B.

Seattle Mariners

The M's wouldn't appear to be able to satisfy Alonso's contract demands either, though they surely could use him. First base was a mish-mash for them last season, and the offense as a whole was extremely lacking. It's not the best park for hitters, and Pete's numbers would suffer there.
