FREE AGENT SIGNING: Luis Severino Signs Big 3-Year Deal

Luis Severino had a nice bounce-back season with the New York Mets, enough to take with him into free agency and have some notable demand for his services. He has now turned that into the largest guaranteed contract ever handed out by the Athletics franchise.

He agreed to a three-year, $67 million contract with the Sacramento (formerly Oakland) A's, with an opt-out after the second year. The deal was somewhat above his projections going into free agency, which ranged from $50M-$60M.

Severino will enter his age-31 season having turned his "prove it" deal with the NY Mets last year into security for his future.

The former New York Yankee & Met had only pitched 209 1/3 innings combined over his previous five seasons heading into 2024, but he went out and tossed 182 innings in Queens in 2024, registering an 11-7 record with a 3.91 ERA and 1.24 WHIP. He's come back from a series of injuries to turn himself into a solid third starter in a rotation, albeit with a different repertoire that relies more on his sinker, rather than blowing people away with the fastball.

Severino went into the offseason as the 11th-ranked starting pitcher in free agency.
