Free Agent Signing: Josh Bell Has Returned to Familiar Territory

Another first baseman is on the move this offseason, as free agent Josh Bell has returned to familiar territory, signing a one year, $6 million deal with the Washington Nationals.

Interestingly, the Nationals also recently acquired first baseman Nate Lowe from the Texas Rangers, so it’s quite possible that Bell will be spending most of his time as the DH in DC this season.

Bell, 32, had one of his best seasons in the majors in Washington back in 2021 when he blasted 27 homers to go with 88 RBIs and a 124 OPS+. In his 247 games for Washington from 2021-22, he posted a 136 OPS+ with 41 homers. He’ll also bring clubhouse chemistry and a veteran presence.

But perhaps what he’ll best be known for from his first go-round in Washington is that he joined Juan Soto in departing the Nats to the San Diego Padres in that massive blockbuster trade.

In 2024, with the Miami Marlins and Arizona Diamondbacks, he had 19 HR and 71 RBIs. In his nine-year career, Bell has a .790 OPS and a 114 OPS+.
