Former Fan Favorite Announces Surprising Retirement
Wil Myers, a former fan favorite and standout in MLB, has announced his decision to retire after an 11-year career.
The 34-year-old, who last played for the Cincinnati Reds in 2023, stepped away from the game following struggles with shoulder injuries and a midseason release.
While Myers has no plans to officially file retirement paperwork, he confirmed his playing days are behind him. “I had a great career. I loved what I did. I made a lot of great friends. I have no regrets,” Myers told MLB.com. “If you had told me the day I was drafted that this would be your career, I would’ve taken it in a heartbeat.”

Drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 2009, Myers rose to stardom with the Tampa Bay Rays, earning AL Rookie of the Year honors in 2013 after hitting .293 with 13 home runs in just 88 games.
In 2014, he was traded to the San Diego Padres in a blockbuster deal, where he became a cornerstone of the team’s resurgence. Over eight seasons in San Diego, Myers made an All-Star appearance in 2016 and contributed to the Padres’ playoff runs in 2020 and 2022.
He excelled at multiple positions and posted back-to-back 20-20 seasons in 2016 and 2017. Myers was a fan favorite for his power, speed, and ability to deliver clutch performances.
