Detroit Tigers Sign Veteran Starting Pitcher

The Detroit Tigers have signed veteran right-hander Alex Cobb to a one-year contract, pending a physical, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic

The 37-year-old brings 13 years of MLB experience with teams like the Tampa Bay Rays, San Francisco Giants, and Cleveland Guardians.

Cobb endured a challenging 2024 season, limited to just five starts due to injuries including hip surgery and shoulder discomfort.

Despite these setbacks, the Tigers are banking on his ability to rebound, much like he did from 2021 to 2023 when he posted a 3.79 ERA over 394.1 innings as a reliable mid-rotation starter.

His groundball-heavy approach complements Detroit’s infield defense, and his arsenal—featuring a sinker, splitter, and curveball—suits Comerica Park’s pitcher-friendly dimensions.

“When healthy, Cobb has proven he can deliver valuable innings and steady the rotation,” Rosenthal noted.

Manager A.J. Hinch will hope Cobb can provide stability to a staff that relied heavily on bullpen games during last year’s playoff push.

Cobb joins a rotation featuring Tarik Skubal, Reese Olson, and Kenta Maeda, with Casey Mize and top prospect Jackson Jobe also competing for roles.

Detroit, fresh off its first postseason appearance in a decade, is looking to build on that momentum and is reportedly still exploring other rotation upgrades, including Walker Buehler and Kyle Gibson.
