TRADE: Orioles Acquire Former Top Prospect From Athletics

The Baltimore Orioles have reacquired outfielder Daz Cameron from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for cash considerations, marking his second stint with the organization.

Once a highly-touted prospect, Cameron was initially selected 37th overall in the 2015 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros, where he caught the eye of then-scouting director (and current Orioles GM) Mike Elias.

Elias valued Cameron's potential so highly that he awarded him a signing bonus comparable to a top-five pick.

Cameron’s career trajectory then took him to Detroit in 2017, when he was traded as part of the package for Justin Verlander. Despite his promising start, Cameron struggled to find consistency in the majors, batting .201/.266/.330 over three seasons with the Tigers.

After Detroit designated Cameron for assignment in 2022, the Orioles briefly claimed him off waivers, though he didn’t secure a spot on their 40-man roster and spent 2023 with Triple-A Norfolk.

There, he showcased his speed and improved plate discipline, slashing .268/.346/.452 with 23 stolen bases, a 21.3% strikeout rate, and a 9.6% walk rate.

Cameron then moved to the Athletics, where he impressed in Triple-A with a .307 average and 1.001 OPS but struggled to translate that performance to the majors, hitting .200 with five home runs in 186 plate appearances in 2024.

Elias’s decision to bring Cameron back to Baltimore reflects his confidence in Cameron’s underlying potential. “Only giving up cash considerations to acquire someone with Major League experience and who was a top prospect at one point in his career is a savvy move,” Elias commented.

While Cameron may not see extensive playing time in Baltimore’s crowded outfield, he brings valuable depth and a chance to reset his career in an organization that believes in his skill set.
